Building Paintbench in the open
Why this exists, and what "the open" actually means for a one-person build.
Paintbench started as a personal site for logging my own painting projects.
The paint card, the lore book, the changelog, all of it grew out of wanting a
better home for one hobby. Enough people asked "could I get one of these" that
it made sense to turn it into something anyone can use.
This blog is where the story and the build updates live, not the painting
content itself. If you want to see actual minis and lore, that is what your
own Paintbench site (or the founder site) is for.
A few things I want to be upfront about from day one:
- It is made by a painter, for painters, many of whom paint to slow down and
escape. It should never feel corporate. - The paint colour data that powers the paint card comes from Rick Fleuren's
Miniature Painter Pro dataset (MIT licensed). Full credit lives on the
credits page. - Export-your-content is a first-class feature, not an afterthought. Your
words are yours.
More soon.
